TEFL in Ecuador

The biggest demand for English teachers in Ecuador is in the three largest cities – Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. Most jobs involve teaching the business community or university students. Ecuador derives its name from the equator which it rests on and therefore classes begin early at 7AM in order to avoid the heat during the day and continue later on in the day or during the evening. It is unlikely that you will find yourself earning a wage that will allow you to save but while your wages are low they should allow you to live modestly.
If you are TEFL qualified and also have a university degree you will likely be earning $5-$7 per hour or if you do not have a degree you will be at the lower end of the scale and paid $3-$5 per hour. These wages are low compared to other countries but the living costs in Ecuador are also low. Technically speaking, you should not be working in Ecuador on a visitors visa but this is not tightly regulated and British nationals are allowed to stay in the country for up to six months.
There are several different geographical regions you can visit when in Ecuador, from the Amazonian jungle to volcanoes in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’. Active people will find more than enough to do in Ecuador such as diving, trekking, riding and rafting which are all dramatically enhanced by the amazing landscape. Wages will restrict what you can do but they shouldn’t restrict you from having a good time!
