TEFL in Romania

It can be difficult for native English speakers to find work teaching English in Romania. English is taught to a reasonably high standard in the country and while many schools would love to employ native English speakers most simply cannot afford to do so. In order to teach in the country you will need to apply for a work permit from the Ministry of Employment and Social Security which will cost $200. In order to secure a this permit you will need a TEFL Certificate and a university degree.
Those just starting out as a teacher in Romania can expect to earn about €250 a month which is the same as Romanian teachers earn. Accommodation is often provided but otherwise it can take up the majority of a teacher’s wages particularly if you are working in Bucharest. Considering that your salary will likely be the same as a Romanian teacher, it is obviously possible to live on your wages.
It is generally quite cheap to live in Romania but as mentioned above accommodation in Bucharest can be expensive in relation to what you are earning and it is also important to keep in mind that standards of accommodation are not as high in Romania as they are in the West. Importantly, however, the students that you will teach are usually enthusiastic about learning English as well as learning all about your life in the West! It may be a good idea to bring as many teaching materials with you as you can as in many schools they are in short supply.
