TEFL in Turkey

Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 17:05 on 25 March 2010

There are a great many jobs available for those wishing to teach English in Turkey and many schools provide accommodation and pay for flights on completion of contract. In order to work in Turkey you will most likely need a university degree and a TEFL certificate and you will also need a work permit but many schools are not willing to pay the fees for one. Working on a tourist visa would mean that you would have to leave the country every three months in order to renew it, otherwise you would face a rather large fine if you tried leaving the country on an expired visa!

The monthly salary is usually about $1,000 in private language schools and hourly rates are not very common with most schools employing teachers on a contract. If you are employed on a contract then it is technically illegal for you to teach private lessons, however, most employers will turn a blind eye as long as students are not being taken from their institution.

If you want to work in Turkey then you’re probably not looking to put a lot of money away in the bank. Many teachers have an amazing experience and spend their money travelling around the country and enjoying the local culture even if their wages are at the lower end of the scale. Unfortunately, most women experience some level of harassment from a minority of Turkish men and the best way to handle such situations is to ignore it. The vast majority of Turkish people are warm and welcoming people and the country as a whole is considered by many as a good place to live and work.

It was interactive, interesting, hands-on. I learnt a lot. Elaine White, Assistant Headmistress, Dewsbury
