TEFL in Ghana

Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 16:06 on 26 March 2010

While English is the official language of Ghana, most people speak the language of the tribes they were born into and therefore need to learn English in schools in order to converse with others in the country. The majority of jobs for teaching English in Ghana are voluntary and there are many organisations that send out volunteers at varying costs to the individual. Some organisations require you to pay a monthly fee to cover food and accommodation in addition to travel expenses while others only require you to pay for the flights there and back.

Teaching in Ghana is a rewarding experience, just as it is in most other African countries. You will quite likely be teaching a variety of subjects such as English, maths and science to disadvantaged children who are enthusiastic about learning. Resources tend to be limited so teachers need to use some creativity in their teaching methods and it would be recommended that they bring as many teaching materials with them as they can.

The Ghanian people are fantastically friendly and many volunteers actually live with a Ghanian family and therefore are able to get a real feel for what it is like to live in the country. For people who love to experience different cultures this is surely a fantastic opportunity to be integrated into a community and live life just as the locals do.

It was interactive which made it a really fun and interesting way to learn. We learnt the theory first then got plenty of chances to put it all into practice. By the end I felt more confident about teaching an English language class. Deborah Wright, Unemployed, Cheshire
