Beat the recession with TEFL

The economic downturn has meant that finding a job in the UK is harder than ever. Unemployment figures are still sky-high and there has been a 22.9% increase in the number of students applying for university this year despite fewer places being available. There seems to be few options for those having trouble finding work and there is an increasing amount of people considering escaping abroad to find a job.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is an industry largely unaffected by the recession and over 20,000 job adverts are published online every month! As well as being an amazing way of experiencing a country you can also earn a good wage and save money. South East Asia is a popular destination for TEFL teachers due to the good wages and living conditions – in South Korea you could earn £1500 as well as be provided with free accommodation! Jobs are not confined to Asia, however, and you could find work around the world in South America, Europe and Africa too!
The first (and occasionally only) requirement for working as a TEFL teacher is that you are a native English speaker. Most jobs will require you to have a TEFL certificate while some may require you to have a degree as well. TEFL England’s 20-hour weekend course can give you the qualification you need in just a single weekend to get out and teach abroad! The course is taught by experienced tutors and you will learn how you can teach English as a foreign language and be confident in the classroom. Weekend and online courses are also available – have a look at the courses page for more details.
Absolutely anyone can become an English teacher as long as you are a native speaker. Whether you are a bricklayer or hold a PhD in physics you can find work somewhere abroad teaching English! You could be working in an exotic location earning a good wage rather than struggling to find employment back in the UK and you will also pick up and develop skills that will look impressive on any CV!
Whether your intentions are to help a struggling community or earn money, teaching English abroad is a realistic option for anyone – make the change, do something different and beat the recession!
