TEFL in Algeria

The education system in Algeria has many problems regarding teaching quality but the country is aiming to overcome these. There is more of a need for TEFL teachers now that English has become an important part of the curriculum. Algeria concentrated for some time on increasing attendance in schools and currently spends a quarter of the government’s entire budget on education. 97% of boys between six and sixteen and 91% of girls now attend school which is free and compulsory, however, the government wants to focus on the quality of education and bring up the literacy rate of 70% (which is much better than several nearby countries) to international standards.
TEFL teachers can expect to earn $600 in state schools and up to $1000 in higher education institutes. Private language schools may cover accommodation as well as meals – food is very cheap in Algeria so even if your school doesn’t cover meals it won’t be at a great expense to you.
It is fairly cheap to live in Algeria and you should have plenty of money enabling you to travel around the country. Means of travel such as trains, buses and taxis are fairly cheap – however, it isn’t considered safe to flag down a taxi in a street, instead you should book by telephone. The Sahara desert covers 85% of the country where nomadic tribes reside and in the north, along the coast, there are plenty of opportunities for water sport enthusiasts!
