TEFL in Austria

Working in Austria for EU-nationals is reasonably easy as citizens of EU states are able to move freely within other EU countries. Non-EU citizens, however, will find it difficult to get into the country and face a large amount of red tape. Work permits are not necessary, however, as long as you are self-employed and are not taking classes of more than five pupils. In order to work in Austria you usually need a TEFL certificate and a university degree and, taking into account some Austrians reluctance to learn English, having some degree of knowledge of German can be helpful but it is not vital.
Austria was left relatively untouched during WWII so much of its ancient architecture and grand castles remain which can create the feel of being transported centuries back in time! It is also one of the safest countries in Europe and has a very low crime rate. Dining out in Austria is cheaper than back in the UK but overall, living costs are much the same as the rest of Europe and you won’t have the same amount of spending money as you might were you teaching in South East Asia.
Most people find Austrians to be kind and welcoming. They are very sociable people and often go to pubs, cafes and restaurants during the weekends. Austria is well known for its ski resorts and any skiers will no doubt take advantage of the Austrian Alps. Many go to Austria and fall in love with the country due to the beauty of the cities and landscape and also the friendliness of the people.
