TEFL in Bulgaria

Based in Sofia, the organisation Teachers for Central and Eastern Europe (TFCEE) is most active in Bulgaria. Teaching positions for native English speakers in the country are organised by The Minister of Education & Science and the TFCEE hires about eighty people each year on behalf of the department. Those employed through the TFCEE can expect to earn about $130 (which is a third more than most Bulgarian teachers make) and be provided with accommodation, healthcare cover, free Bulgarian language classes, paid sick leave and sixty days paid holiday.

Contacting schools directly is unlikely to secure a job as positions are generally all sorted out by The Ministry of Education & Science. The private sector is not as developed in Bulgaria as it is elsewhere but in the country the Greek company, Strategakis, has a network of schools for foreign languages and Pharos has thirty schools.

Due to the developing nature of Bulgaria’s economy, living costs are very low. Beer costs less than EUR 1 while a meal will cost between EUR 5-7 and supermarket produce is also low in price. The climate and history of the country tend to be amongst the main reasons why people are drawn to Bulgaria and many find the people warm and welcoming. It is also a reasonably safe country with very little crime.

I am interested in relocating to Bulgaria on a permanent basis and would like to secure employment before leaving the uk. The area I would like to relocate to is in the Bourgas area any information on TEFL schools in this area would be much appreciated. I would also like to know where the best place to study is. The quality of the qualification is of much more importance than the location. Although I have to say I fancy studying in Prague purely because its a city I would love to explore when I have a little spare time. Alternatively I would consider Sofia/Varna purely because its the country in which I intend to relocate to. Any advice or information you can give me would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Hello Andrew, Just picked up your comments. If you are looking to pick up work before going to Bulgaria you will need to get your TEFL Certification before leaving the UK. We offer a range of courses from the iniital 20 Hour TEFL Certificate to 110 hours of TEFL training. An online search for TEFL schools in Bulgaria should find you some contacts ad as it says in the blog the Greek chain of Strategakis is now operating there. We also offer a directory of schools in Bulgaria to all of our course graduates.

Hi Maggie! Yes, a TEFL England certificate will allow you to find work all over the world. I'd suggest that language school work or private tutoring would be an excellent option for you once you are qualified.

I want to re-locate to Varna and would like to teach English as this is a good way to gain employment and would also be a very interesting and rewarding way to earn a living. Could you let me know a suitable course to study and any suggestions on getting a job

Hi Mark, I'd suggest taking one of our Recommended TEFL courses, perhaps the 120-hour one? All TEFL England students can get a free TEFL Employers Contact Directory, which will have details of schools to apply to directly. There's also plenty of assistance on offer through our Job Placement Service.

I liked the simplicity of the teacher's explanation, very informative and accepting of all the answers. Very participatory. Juan Blanco, Unemployed, London
