TEFL in Chile

The program, ‘English Opens Doors’, was set up by the Chilean government in order to increase the standard of English amongst school pupils. Native English speakers are placed in classrooms to teach alongside Chilean teachers and can expect to engage in all sorts of activities. There are some requirements that you must meet in order to take part in this program – you need to be a native English speaker, have a bachelors degree, be between age 21 and 50, have a basic level of Spanish and have comprehensive health coverage. It is also recommended that you have a TEFL certificate prior to this program.
There are many other job opportunities outside this program. As long as you have a university degree and a decent CV then finding work shouldn’t be a problem. Rather than acquiring a work permit, many people just work on a tourist visa which means leaving and re-entering the country every three months. Many just find work in-country rather than arranging a position before they leave – this can sometimes mean a better wage as being tied to a contract from the start means that you are unable to find better paid work.
English teachers can expect to earn about $8 an hour and earn up to $10,000 a year which is significantly more than the average wage! Therefore you will be able to live well and travel the country during your time off. Working in Chile can be very appealing for English teachers due to the amount of jobs available, the stable economy and the way the people are so welcoming to foreigners.
