TEFL in Estonia

Teachers in Estonia are placed into five different ranks based on experience and qualifications – the higher the rank the higher the pay. First time teachers will be placed in the lower rank while those with previous teaching experience will possibly be paid more. Many students are interested in learning English as more and more employers look for people who have a second language, particularly English. This demand for English speakers means that there are many jobs for TEFL teachers in the country, especially in the capital, Tallinn. While a degree is not usually necessary you will need a TEFL certificate.
Some schools will cover airfares and provide health insurance but this is less likely if you are a first time teacher. Teachers with little previous experience to earn about 1,000 Euros a month with more highly qualified teachers possibly earning more. Your wages will cover living expenses easily considering that Estonia is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to live in.
Employers tend to prefer to interview rather than employ over the phone so you will likely find it easier to find work in-country – this shouldn’t eat into your funds too much as living costs, as mentioned above, are very cheap! EU residents only require a work permit to work in Estonia while those from outside will need to sort out a visa – luckily, this is usually sorted out by your employer, saving you from a lot of paperwork!
