TEFL in India

Most opportunities for teaching English in India are on a volunteer basis and this work is plentiful considering the desire for English speakers in the country. Paid work is available, particularly in the business world where English is becoming increasingly more important but competition is strong and you will more than likely need a TEFL Certificate as well as a degree.
English is generally taught poorly in state schools in India. Despite six periods a week for six years, Indian children often leave school unable to speak English very well at all. This is due to the focus on passing exams rather than encouraging children to speak the language effectively – knowledge of grammar is usually high but conversational skills are very poor. TEFL teachers should have a desire to make a difference and introduce new ways of learning to children and encourage them to speak and use the language at all times during class.
India is a hugely culturally diverse country and along with cheap living costs it can be a very appealing place to some people. In some places accommodation can be expensive but food, drink and clothes are very cheap. Indian people are usually very friendly and have a great interest in life in the west so you can expect to be approached often and asked about life back home!

“The practical exercises which re-enforced learning. The clarity and pace of the course led by Alex. Although informal a lot of learning took place. A really enjoyable experience making every body feel at ease and through this achieve. Highly recommeded!” Priscilla Flanders-Brazier, Teacher, Middlesex
