TEFL in Latvia

Teaching English in Latvia can be a very rewarding experience considering the amount of respect students show their teachers. Latvian people are generally warm and kind and students are enthusiastic about learning and also very interested in life in the UK!

Working in Latvia does not require a work permit or a visa if you are a citizen of a European country. You can get a 90 day visa if you are not a European citizen but obtaining a work permit and appropriate visa will likely be a lengthy process and can be costly.

A TEFL teacher can expect to earn around $700 a month but this can vary greatly depending on the school. Benefits such as accommodation are provided by some schools but not others. Make sure that you research any school that has given you an offer to make sure it has a good reputation and remember not to sign any contract without reading it thoroughly! If you are TEFL qualified and have a degree then you shouldn’t have any problem finding work in Latvia, otherwise you will just have to look for work a bit harder! The best place to look for work is the capital, Riga, as there is not a huge amount of work available elsewhere in the country.

Riga has recently become a very popular destination for stag and hen parties due to the very cheap flights to the capital. However, this has mean that prices in the city are not as cheap as they used to be but you should still manage to get by on your wages although it is unlikely you will manage to save while working in Latvia.

Winters in Latvia are long and cold and summers are short and cool – it certainly isn’t a country famous for a particularly warm climate! However, around June time the weather is at its best and there is a considerable stretch of beautiful beach near Riga which is a very popular destination with tourists.
