TEFL in Lithuania

English is now the second language of choice in Lithuania so there is certainly a demand for TEFL teachers in the country. Students are generally very respectful towards teachers – quite different, then to back home in the UK! – and usually enthusiastic about learning English despite the poor resources available at many schools.
The country has experienced increased prices in the past few years which has made it difficult for some teachers to get by on the wages they receive which are usually between 1800-2200 litas. Teachers also regularly complain about the amount of paperwork involved with the job and how much it eats into their time for getting to know the city they’re living in. Teaching freelance is a possibility but most do this after spending some amount of time in the country in order to get to know people who can then recommend them to others.
Lithuania is perhaps a country better suited to more experienced TEFL teachers and travellers but it certainly isn’t exclusive to these people. Price increases in the country will mean you will need to watch the pennies to make sure that your wages will get you through the month. A good idea is to try and find accommodation outside the capital which will cost you much less and scout out some reasonably cheap places for eating out and grabbing a drink. You should still be able to enjoy your time in the country – just think of it as a good lesson in budgeting!
