TEFL in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the most developed countries in South East Asia and English teachers are in great demand. The Malaysian government ran a scheme where maths and science were taught using English but demand exceeded supply and the scheme will be phased out by 2012. Instead, there will now be more of a focus on separate English language classes and the government aims to employ 14,000 English language teachers before 2012. This means that for TEFL teachers now is a great time to seek work in Malaysia.
Wages can vary quite considerably from RM1500 to 6000 ($400-$1600). While it is possible to secure a job before entering the country, this can be very difficult as most employers would prefer to interview potential employees so it may be a good idea to make up a list of schools you want to apply to and then go to the country.
Even in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, living costs are very low and in the list of 143 most expensive countries to live in, Kuala Lumpur ranks near the bottom at 96. Most things are generally quite cheap, importantly the essentials – accommodation, food, drink and clothes are all much cheaper in Malaysia than back home in the UK. As English is widely spoken in the capital (the level of fluency varies) you shouldn’t have a problem communicating with locals and market sellers.
What makes Malaysia such an interesting country is its cultural diversity with the population made up of Malay, Chinese and Indian people. It is also easy to travel by bus or train to Thailand or Singapore and experience more of South East Asia as well as the beauty that is the landscape of Malaysia.

“Wow! Passed my grammar with flying colours. Having fallen foul of a grammar question on the 50 hour course I decided to do the grammar course ASAP! This was a daunting prospect. However the excellent presentation of the course, clear instructions and a couple of tips from fellow students made it an enjoyable experience rewarded with an excellent grade and a huge boost to my self esteem. Thank you!” Rosemary Wilson, Peterborough
