TEFL in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the most developed countries in South East Asia and English teachers are in great demand. The Malaysian government ran a scheme where maths and science were taught using English but demand exceeded supply and the scheme will be phased out by 2012. Instead, there will now be more of a focus on separate English language classes and the government aims to employ 14,000 English language teachers before 2012. This means that for TEFL teachers now is a great time to seek work in Malaysia.

Wages can vary quite considerably from RM1500 to 6000 ($400-$1600). While it is possible to secure a job before entering the country, this can be very difficult as most employers would prefer to interview potential employees so it may be a good idea to make up a list of schools you want to apply to and then go to the country.

Even in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, living costs are very low and in the list of 143 most expensive countries to live in, Kuala Lumpur ranks near the bottom at 96. Most things are generally quite cheap, importantly the essentials – accommodation, food, drink and clothes are all much cheaper in Malaysia than back home in the UK. As English is widely spoken in the capital (the level of fluency varies) you shouldn’t have a problem communicating with locals and market sellers.

What makes Malaysia such an interesting country is its cultural diversity with the population made up of Malay, Chinese and Indian people. It is also easy to travel by bus or train to Thailand or Singapore and experience more of South East Asia as well as the beauty that is the landscape of Malaysia.

What requirements do you need to teach English in Malaysia? I.e. do you need a degree and which level TEFL do you need?

Hi Amy, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yes, you do need a degree for Malaysia. The requierment is for a Certiifcate in ELT (ie a TEFL Certiifcate). We generally recommend doing as many hours of training as possible. Please take a look here http://www.teflengland.co.uk/tefl-course-fees.asp to see the courses available. I hope this helps.

I have completed an 18 hour TEFLTraining Course with the International TEFL Training and I would like to enquire whether it is recognised for TEFL jobs in Malaysia.I have an unclassified degree in Business studies.

Hi Eileen. Unfortunately, we can only help with applications for TEFL teachers who hold a TEFL England certificate. Employers specifically look to hire our graduates and respect our position as the most accredited UK TEFL course provider.

Hi, I have just enrolled in the 120hr TEFL course. I also have a TKT and 2yr experience as a teaching assistant/substitute. I am also a native speaker, is that enough to get a job in one of these schools in Malaysia?

Hi Soukayna, While we're not recruiting for TEFL jobs in Malaysia right now, from vacancies I have seen, your background plus the TEFL qualification you are studying for would make you a strong candidate for jobs like these. 2 years of experience with children would make you eligible for a wide range of jobs in Malaysia. The only other thing I would recommend is to check out visa requirements for the country. Good luck on your TEFL adventure!

Wow! Passed my grammar with flying colours. Having fallen foul of a grammar question on the 50 hour course I decided to do the grammar course ASAP! This was a daunting prospect. However the excellent presentation of the course, clear instructions and a couple of tips from fellow students made it an enjoyable experience rewarded with an excellent grade and a huge boost to my self esteem. Thank you! Rosemary Wilson, Peterborough
