TEFL in Sweden

There are two ways of finding work teaching English in Sweden. The easiest is through the Folkuniversitetet of Sweden which offers between five and ten posts a year for British and other native English speakers. The FU has run this scheme since 1955 and gives the opportunity of a nine month placements in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Uppsala or Umea. The other option is to contact the main state universities if you already have teaching experience as teaching posts in Sweden are rarely advertised so finding work can be difficult.
720 hours of work is guaranteed by the Folkuniversitetet and pays a minimum of 14,000 SEK per month. This wage is sufficient to live in Sweden but saving will be difficult. Teachers are required to pay tax and can expect to pay approximately 30% of their wages. You can expect to earn £8-£10 per hour.
Going out in Sweden is not cheap and therefore meeting locals outside your place of work can be hard work. What the country has to offer is arguably better suited to the more independent person – by law you will have free access to the countryside which is perfect for hiking and during the seven months of winter those interested in skiing and other winter sports will find it suits them well.
