TEFL in Vietnam

Vietnam is a great place to teach English if you are looking to save money as well as experience exotic locations. In Ho Chi Minh City (the largest in Vietnam) living costs are slightly more expensive than in Hanoi but both are considerably cheaper than what you would expect to find in most other large cities. The demand for native English speakers is great in Vietnam and while a degree is not usually necessary, a TEFL certificate is considered highly desirable. Most schools hire in-country and it is important to remember that looking professional is very important in order to secure a job in Vietnam – so don’t turn up for an interview wearing shorts and sandals!

Eating at side street restaurants can allow you to get by on just $5 a day for food and purchasing food from street stalls can be incredibly cheap. Well qualified teachers can earn about $20 per hour while at the lower end of the scale wages are between $10 and $15. Your salary will allow you to live comfortably with a good flat usually costing between $200 and $300 and many people also manage to save money while working.

The country itself is stunning and is home to two National Heritage sites: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Ha Long Bay. There are 3000 chalk islands rising out of the South China Sea by Ha Long Bay making this particular area of Vietnam a must-see for its impressive beauty. The landscape in the country is breathtaking with huge mountains towering over traditional little villages where people still wear the native dress. The beauty of the country makes the amount of red tape involved in securing work there worth enduring as living in Vietnam is truly an exceptional experience.

It was interactive which made it a really fun and interesting way to learn. We learnt the theory first then got plenty of chances to put it all into practice. By the end I felt more confident about teaching an English language class. Deborah Wright, Unemployed, Cheshire
