Choosing accredited TEFL courses
TEFL England receives many calls from people looking for accredited TEFL courses and asking questions about different TEFL course providers.
Recently, we have had many enquiries regarding one provider offering a 120-hour course for £65. The provider in question does not have any accreditation at present for 120-hour online TEFL courses or 20-hour weekend TEFL courses as they claim, nor is this completely automated online TEFL course fully tutor-supported.
Accredited TEFL courses can cost as little as £169 and offer the quality training, support and post-qualification help to find work.
Read on to find out how to choose a quality TEFL course to suit you.
A TEFL course should have:
- Accreditation from external educational bodies, NOT from the company teaching you.
- A personal tutor to mark your work and answer your questions.
- Support from real TEFL experts, not salespeople.
- Support in finding TEFL jobs, for example, through a TEFL Job Placement Service.
- Testimonials from successful students who have used the TEFL certificate to find work.
All of these are available on accredited TEFL England courses

About ODLQC Accreditation
The ODLQC (Open and Distance Learning Quality Council) have strict standards to which course providers must conform. It is not just the quality of our courses that the ODLQC assesses, but the whole process from start to finish. Our ODLQC accreditation means that our courses have passed a rigorous evaluation and continue to be monitored regularly.
You can visit the ODLQC site to view accredited providers.
For other bodies which accredit TEFL courses, please see our Accreditation page.
As well as quality standards and accreditation, check how much tutor guidance and support you receive on an online TEFL course. Tutors should be offering feedback on assignments and be available to answer questions.
Choosing the right TEFL course
As a company completely run by TEFL experts, TEFL England aims to help others share the positive experiences of teaching English abroad that we have had. We are happy to offer advice so that you can be sure of choosing an accredited TEFL course and gaining a TEFL certificate that will be recognised around the world.
When choosing a TEFL course, it is important to check the following:
-
What accreditation does the TEFL course provider have?
Check that the course you are interested in has accreditation so that your TEFL certificate will be recognised around the world.
Following up by checking the websites of accrediting organisations is a good move. Some TEFL course providers may imply that they are accredited by
TEFL England courses hold accreditation from the NCFE and ODLQC. TEFL England is also an SQA Approved Centre.

What tutor guidance and support is offered during the course?
Working through your TEFL course with a personal tutor is incredibly important. In a completely automated course, you have no access to a qualified and experienced teacher to turn to for assistance.
TEFL England online TEFL courses are studied in conjunction with your personal tutor. They are there to advise you, answer questions, mark your work and support you through any problems you might have with your TEFL course. Our weekend TEFL courses are also run by qualified and experienced trainers. You can meet some of our many TEFL tutors here: The TEFL Team

What support is offered to help you find TEFL jobs once you are TEFL qualified?
We understand that moving to a different country to teach English as a foreign language can be a daunting prospect. While unrelated to the training itself, many TEFL students appreciate the additional services in careers assistance provided by good TEFL course providers. This can include careers advice, CV assistance or job vacancies.
A TEFL Jobs Service also demonstrates that TEFL employers around the world recognise and accept a provider's TEFL certificates.
TEFL England offers a free TEFL Job Placement Service to all students on our TEFL courses. You can find out more here: TEFL Job Placement Service
