Teaching English in Germany
There is an active EFL market in Germany with the greatest demand coming from the business and professional community. Due to the high levels of English taught in state schools there is little call for the teaching of English at an elementary level. If you have any kind of business background this can be an advantage in finding work in Germany. Business experience and or previous teaching experience really enhance job prospects in TEFL in Germany.
Learning some German can also help improve job prospects though you should only use English in the classroom and the ‘direct method’ ie immersion teaching of English is very widely used in Germany.
Much of the available work is as in-house trainers within companies. This is relatively well-paid and companies have been encouraged by the government to increase training. There are plenty of jobs available once you have done your first year but around the more popular cities such as Freiburg and Munich there are a lot of inexperienced teachers scrabbling for positions.
It is also a lot easier to find work once in-country than sending off CVs and applications from Britain. The best place to find out where schools etc are is once again the country’s Yellow Pages. This can be found online. (Gelbe Sieten)
Without previous experience and German we would highly recommend doing the 120-hour TEFL course before setting off to Germany.
