TEFL Volunteering in London
TEFL England is currently recruiting for voluntary positions in London.
Volunteering is a popular way to make use of your TEFL qualification. Volunteering often offers great rewards as you can see how your work makes a difference to those who may not be able to otherwise afford such opportunities. Volunteering with TEFL is also a great way to gain experience that can lead to better job opportunities. If you are interested in teaching abroad with your TEFL certificate but want to be sure that TEFL is for you, this is a great opportunity to find out more by getting some real world experience of working with students.
While these are not formal teaching positions as such, they do offer an excellent opportunity to put into practice what you have learned on your TEFL courses. Three different volunteering schemes are available. Positions are available based in primary schools, working with refugees and with adults who want to improve their conversational English one-to-one. Programmes are coordinated by the English-Speaking Union.
English in Action in Schools

In the primary school positions, you will be supporting children who have English as an additional language based at their own schools. You would be working one-to-one or with a small group of children building fluency and confidence in English. This would be achieved through games, songs and activities to create lively and fun sessions. For schools positions, you must commit to at least an hour a week for a full school term and enhanced CRB checks will be carried out. You should also be patient, reliable, flexible and interested in working with children.
Experience English
A second scheme involves one-to-one sessions with refugees in conjunction with a partner charity. This scheme focuses less on language and more on befriending clients while improving their confidence and communication skills for life in the UK. A ten week minimum commitment is necessary and you should be a reliable and flexible person with good communication skills. There is currently a waiting list for working in these volunteering positions, but you can register your interest in taking part.
English in Action

The adult conversational English scheme runs in ten week terms and allows you to learn more about both your students’ cultures and probably about your own! These one-to-one volunteering positions would be perfect for someone who is interested in promoting international understanding and helping people adjust to life in the UK. Students will all have at least basic English and the timing of one hour sessions is flexible (many volunteers work with their students after work for example).
